As I approach the final stages of my PhD at the University of Minnesota, where I am set to be the first Black American to earn a PhD in Music Composition, I reflect on the complexities of this journey in a space that has often felt unwelcoming. Despite these challenges, the journey has been transformative, helping me evolve not just as a scholar but as a community leader and activist.

My dissertation examines the role of music in bridging cultural divides, particularly through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the urgent calls for racial justice that have resonated globally. Through compositions like 'Bridges,' my work seeks to harness music’s unique ability to mirror and influence the human condition, promoting understanding and cooperation across diverse communities.

Navigating this academic path has not been easy, particularly in environments that are not always inclusive. However, these experiences have fostered growth and resilience, propelling me to advocate for those who feel marginalized within similar spaces. This has reinforced my commitment to advancing music education and incorporating diversity and inclusion into the fabric of academic and creative institutions.

As I prepare for my defense and look ahead, I am mindful of the opportunities to lead and innovate at the intersection of music and cultural discourse. The skills and insights I’ve gained are assets I am eager to bring to leadership roles in organizations dedicated to artistic and cultural advancement, continuing to work for the benefit of communities that seek recognition and a voice.
